Can a team of Brigidine students do what's never been done before and lead the charge

to a greener electric future?

Can they combine their creativity and intellectual power to convince multiple organisations to take the first steps towards a revolution?

Our Goals:

Short term: To promote the uptake of Electric Vehicles by demonstrating the ease of use and benefits, both to society and the environment of EV charging.

Medium term: To install TWO EV charging points in the Wilson's car park at 'The Spot'.

Long Term: The aim is to encourage the installation of solar onto the roof of the car park so that clean renewable energy will supply the chargers.

Creating the worlds first Educational Green EV charge point.

QUICK FACTS

  • A study by Asthma Australia showed that air pollution from motor vehicles kills over 1,700 Australians per year - around 650 of those deaths occur in NSW. This study indicates that the annual health costs of air pollution from vehicles is estimated to be $3 billion in the Sydney-Newcastle-Wollongong region. (1)

  • In terms of emissions, an average new Internal Combustion Engine vehicle emits around 185g CO2/km, whereas an average new EV emits around 98g CO2/km. This means better outcomes for the environment and better health standards, particularly in densely populated areas. There are 19 EVs currently available in Australia with four more models expected in 2019.

  • Australia could eliminate 6% of our total greenhouse gas emissions if everyone drove a Battery EV (BEV) charged by renewable energy.

  • EVs can save the average Australian driver over $1,500 per year on fuel costs.

  • China, the world’s biggest EV market, saw 580,000 EVs sold in 2017, while in Norway, half of all new cars sold in 2018 were EVs.

  • Only 2,300 battery and hybrid EVs were sold in Australia in 2017, a 67% increase from 2016.

  • Using electricity to power vehicles also means improved national fuel security. With electricity generated domestically, we will lessen our reliance on importing liquid fuel from other countries to sustain our transport sector. (3)

Costs comparison

The average cost today of running a car on liquid fuel is $1.50 per litre, while the average cost of running an electric vehicle is $0.33  The cost of recharging a vehicle’s battery is 3 cents per km compared to 10 cents per km for fuel. (1)

– EVs also require far less maintenance, which equates to significant cost benefits for motorists.
